On January 9, 1968, Israel’s newly-purchased submarine Dakar (Hebrew for swordfish) left Portsmouth, England, under the command of Major Ya’acov Ra’anan. Sixteen days later, he informed Tel Aviv naval headquarters that he had entered the Aegean Sea earlier than expected, his vessel was performing satisfactorily, and all aboard were well. Nothing further was heard from the vessel until January 27, when a radio station in Nicosia received a distress call southeast of Cyprus on the frequency of Dakar’s emergency buoy, which broke off when the submarine “dove rapidly through her maximum depth, suffered a catastrophic hull rupture, and continued her plunge to the bottom [at 9,800 feet]. The emergency buoy was released by the violence of the hull collapse,” according to Wikipedia. 32 All sixty-nine men aboard perished.

Despite a five-nation search for the vessel, its wreckage between the islands of Cyprus and Crete was not located for more than thirty years. “Her conning tower was snapped off and fallen over the side,” Wikipedia writes. “The stern of the submarine, with the propellers and dive planes, broke off aft of the engine room and rests beside the main hull.”33 What could have caused such extensive damages remains unknown, because the Dakar evidenced no signs of having experienced an explosion.
